Bedtime

There she was,
Beautiful and innocent.
Almost unapproachable,
but it was time.

Instead of a line I gave her a look,
not just any look,
I gave her THE LOOK!

You know the one,
head slightly tilted,
one eyebrow raised,
Just the hint of a smile,
and all of the confidence in the world.

Well, as you can imagine,
she had quite a response.

She said, “Daddy, you are so silly.”
and then trotted off to her room,
Totally unimpressed.

Then, right before she closed her door,
she turned and looked at me.
she tilted her head to one side,
raised an eyebrow,
and then ever so slightly...she smiled.

My heart melted,
she is obviously much better than me
at THE LOOK.

Extended Thoughts...

I wrote this when I was thinking about my oldest daughter, Breanna.  I was reflecting on a night when she was doing anything possible to avoid going to bed.

After the drink run, bathroom run and about five or so other attempts to avoid the possibility of falling asleep I finally gave her the look, you know the one that sends a chill down your spine and tells you that you are in eminent danger…

Well she called my bluff and then showed me some mercy by giving in anyway – not before making sure that I knew who the real master of “the look” was.

To this day I can still remember that look, maybe because every now and then she still flashes it at me. Maybe because it is one of those moments that a father can never forget.  A moment that gets indelibly burned into a fathers mind and his heart.
